ঠিকানা প্রবাসীদের আত্মপরিচয়ের ঠিকানা। আমাদের ব্রত স্বদেশ-প্রবাসের সেতুবন্ধ। বিচ্ছিন্ন-বিক্ষিপ্ত প্রবাসীদের মধ্যে যোগসূত্র স্থাপনের মাধ্যম। আমেরিকার মূলধারায় জায়গা করে নেয়া এবং নিজেদের শিল্প-সংস্কৃতি, ইতিহাস-ঐতিহ্য রক্ষার বিশ্বস্ত বাহন। বিশ্বের রাজধানী খ্যাত যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নিউইয়র্কে ৩৪ বছর পূর্বে ১৯৯০ সালের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি শুভ ঠিকানার জন্ম। এই জন্ম ছিলো সময়ের বিচারে অলংঘনীয়, অবশ্যম্ভাবী এবং ঐতিহাসিক। ঠিকানা প্রাক্তন এমপি বাংলাদেশের রাজনীতিতে এক ব্যতিক্রমী রাজনীতিবিদ এম এম শাহীনের মস্তিস্কজাত সন্তান যা তার বাস্তবধর্মী জনসেবামূলক সুদূর প্রসারী চিন্তা চেতনারই ফসল। একদিন কুম্যনিটি বিশাল হবে, দেশপ্রেমে উজ্জীবিত সেই কম্যুনিটির বুকে থাকবে স্বদেশ-স্বজন নিয়ে হাহাকার, নিজ ভাষা শিল্প সাহিত্য সংস্কৃতি ও ঐতিহ্য রক্ষার তাড়না মেটাবার একমাত্র বাহন হতে পরে একটি পরিপূর্ণ বস্তুনিষ্ঠ সংবাদপত্র-তার স্পষ্ট ছবি দেখতে পেয়েছিলেন এম এম শাহীন। তিনি উপলব্ধি করতে পেরেছিলেন স্বদেশের মানুষ প্রবাসে জীবনের ঘাত-প্রতিঘাতে যখন দিশেহারা হয়ে সঠিক আস্থার নোঙর খুঁজবে, খুঁজবে মূলধারায় আশ্রয়, সংকটে ভরসা, আপন কৃষ্টি রক্ষায় খুঁজে বেড়াবে পথ তখন সেই পত্রিকাটি হবে তাদের সবচেয়ে বিশ্বস্ত সবচেয়ে আপন অবলম্বন। তাইতো জনাব শাহীন তার সকল মেধা শ্রম সম্বল উজাড় করে পাহাড় সমান প্রতিকূলতা ঠেলে গড়ে তোলেন আজকের সবার প্রিয় প্রত্যাশিত স্বপ্নের ঠিকানা। জন্মের পর থেকে ঠিকানাও সেই অঙ্গিকার নিয়ে ঝড়-বর্ষণ-তুষারপাতকে তুচ্ছ করে নিরবচ্ছিন্ন প্রকাশনায় কুম্যুনিটি, দেশ ও জাতিকে সেবা করে যাচ্ছে।

Thikana is the abode of Expatriate Bangladeshi’s self-identity. Their destination. It works as a bridge between home and abroad. It’s a medium of connecting and amalgamating expatriate Bangladeshis living in a scattered and isolated way. It serves as a vehicle for them in finding a space in the mainstream society of USA and at the same time upholding one’s own culture, history and tradition.

Looking back

34 years back on 21 February 1990 in the city known as ‘world’s capital’ New York ‘Thikana’ saw the light of the day. In course of time ‘Thikana’s birth was impeccable, inevitable and historical. ‘Thikana’ is the brain child of M M Shaheen, a former Member of Parliament and an exceptional politician of Bangladesh. It was the outcome of his farsighted and practical intention to work for the welfare of the common people.

One day the community would become largand infused with patriotism this community will fill the urge for his own belonging. In such situation M M Shaheen saw a clear picture of a complete and a realistic newspaper which would become a medium for fulfilling one’s lamentation for his own art, literature, culture and tradition. He realized that when the displaced people of home get bewildered due to hardship of a life living abroad and hankers for safer anchorage, shelter in the mainstream, hopes in crisis and looks for his own culture in such circumstances ‘Thikana’ will become their only solace their only dependence. This is why M M Shaheen engaged all his intellect, labor and wealth and embracing severe hostilities built up everybody’s favorite, expected and dream come true ‘Thikana’. Understanding peoples hopes and aspiration ‘Thikana’ too since its birth is relentlessly serving the community and country braving all kinds of adversarieThikana has become such an institution that though M M Shaheen had to leave the paper at it’s early stage, due to the call of the country, the progress of the newspaper has not been hindered. Rather under the able and dynamic leadership of another erudite person Mr. Saeed-ur-Rabb the paper has developed, expanded and has become more popular with the community proving its worthiness of coming to existence. Presently utilizing all the modern facilities and information technology ‘Thikana’ has now become the pride of the expatriate Bangladeshis. Crossing the border of North America ‘Thikana’ is now letting know it’s existence to the people of home and all over the world.

‘Thikana’ was born imbued with the spirit of Ekushey and as such does not know how to give in to any kind of wrongdoing, inhumanity or untruthfulness. Being the mirror of the Society it never neglects its duty towards the society. It never disregards the truth that journalism is the fourth column of the State. In presenting news ‘Thikana’ always judges the significance, reliability and credibility of the news and its sources. The prime duty of the journalist of ‘Thikana’ is to fulfill the demand of the reader with credible news. ‘Thikana’s duty does not stop here it rather works towards molding the mind-set of its readers. Beside, up to the minute happenings in the community, latest events occurring at home and abroad, the political incidence of the mainstream society, occurrences in art, literature and culture all news and views are presented to its readers with integrity and sincerity. ‘Thikana’ is active and works for bringing dynamism to it by introducing new items, ideas and new section. It is always proactive in upholding world peace, human right and civilization. Similarly it sheds light wherever there is darkness.
